What is unique about One The Square
One The Square celebrates the well-made, the handmade, and the original. It values the useful, the renewable, and the practical. It is the antithesis of throwaway, slapdash and soulless.
It is as much about community crochet as it is professional artisans. It promotes the work of both established and up-and-coming professionals and champions the diverse but unsung talent of the region’s many craftspeople. It is also a public venue for learning new and traditional craft skills and knowing the satisfaction of making something from scratch.
Alongside the work of our guest artisans, on a typical day we might be running an upholstery workshop, hosting a talk on growing your own food or exhibiting upcycled objects. Curious visitors enticed by the window display or simply the promise of excellent coffee and cake will find a warm welcome and perhaps an impromptu knitting group.
How we work
One the Square invites professional artisans to rent space for quarterly residencies and provides them with a shop window in which to exhibit and sell their wares. The work of each resident will provide a seasonal focal point for the shop. Running concurrently with their residency will be a programme of public events, workshops and activities for all ages.
